PURPLE SWAMPHEN: Porphyrio porphyrio

Identifying characteristics: 

• Has brick-red colour bill and frontal shield.

• Head an upperparts black, while underparts and wings are a deep blue to purple-black colour.

Distribution:

• Found mostly in northern and eastern parts of Australia but can also be found in southern parts of Western Australia.

Habitat:

•  Found in swamps and marshy paddocks

Call:

• Call is a harsh screaming 'hee-ow' noise.
