Metallic Starling, Aplonis metallica The Metallic Starling is a smallish bird with glossy almost iridescent black plumage and bright, bulging red eyes (inset photograph). They arrive in huge numbers from New Guinea every summer to breed in colonies of nests suspended high in trees. Colonies change locations over the years, but recently, they have appeared in a tree in the Mossman Gorge Aboriginal community that can be seen from the main road into the national park. They are often seen feeding nosily or swirling through and above the canopy throughout the lowlands of the region.
