Damselflies, Family Amphipterygidae or Family Lestoideidae
There are naturally always exceptions to telling damselflies apart from dragonflies by looking at the holding of the wings, and some of the species in this family demonstrate this.
The ‘Blue Damsels’ of the genus Diphlebia tend to rest with their wings outstretched. The 5 species in the genus are endemic only to eastern Australia, except for one species that extends up into New Guinea (Silsby 2001).
These are some of the prettiest and striking insects in tropical Australia, with their bright blue bodies and thin transparent black wings that often have black patches.
They are usually seen perched on rocks in fast fresh streams, such as at Mossman River
