Damselflies, Family Amphipterygidae or Family Lestoideidae

  • There are naturally always exceptions to telling damselflies apart from dragonflies by looking at the holding of the wings, and some of the species in this family demonstrate this.

  • The ‘Blue Damsels’ of the genus Diphlebia tend to rest with their wings outstretched. The 5 species in the genus are endemic only to eastern Australia, except for one species that extends up into New Guinea (Silsby 2001).
  • These are some of the prettiest and striking insects in tropical Australia, with their bright blue bodies and thin transparent black wings that often have black patches.
  • They are usually seen perched on rocks in fast fresh streams, such as at Mossman River
