TAWNY FROGMOUTH: Podargus strigoides Identifying characteristics: Distribution: Habitat: Call: Additional Information: Courtesy of Damon Ramsey A remarkable looking bird that is brownish-grey with a large orange eye. While the Papuan is more common in the tropical rainforest of the lowlands, the Tawny is found in tropical rainforest in the higher altitude rainforest, such as around the Atherton Tablelands. It also extends into drier habitats over most of Australia.
