Narrow-leaved Ginger
Alpinia modesta This is a small ginger with, as the common name suggests, dark green narrow leaves. There is with no petiole where the leaves join up with the pseudo-stem. The underside veins and edges of the leaves, and the main pseudo-stems often have a reddish tinge (Nicholson and Nicholson 1994). Flowers are produced at the end of the main stalks, and are followed by small blue fruits. The rhizome which is just underneath the ground can be eaten and tastes slightly of ginger. This plant is found in the tropical rainforest of eastern and north-eastern Queensland (Nicholson and Nicholson 1994).
